WHO WE ARE

Jacqueline P. Crawford
                           Executive Director

Jacqueline Crawford was appointed Executive Director of Newark Preschool Council in February 2008. She has more than 20 years of experience in a variety of teaching, government and management positions.

She began her career as a teacher after completing a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Hampton University, Hampton Virginia and a masters' degree in Education from Howard University, Washington, DC.  Jackie began to dedicate her efforts to youth and families, as a teacher in the District of Columbia Public Schools, Baltimore City Public Schools, where she served as team leader in what was then the innovative concept of “team teaching in open-spaced classrooms” for second grade students.

By 1980, Ms. Crawford had moved to New Jersey where she continued her interest in children and families. She gained New Jersey State Certification as a teacher of the handicapped, teacher of elementary school and teacher of nursery school.  After teaching elementary children with special needs for three years in the Newark, Ms. Crawford became convinced that she could make a difference in the lives of many of the children in the community if she could discover more ways of reaching families with children at preschool age.  She has devoted the rest of her career to this goal.   (more)

Teaching, Learning, and Making a Difference

Children from one of Newark Preschool Council’s Head Start classes at E T Bowser had an opportunity to show what they have learned about math through the medium of song and movement at a special reception at NJPAC for James Rohr, Chief Financial Officer and CEO of PNC Bank.  PNC Bank and the PNC Foundation have given generously to NPC in two distinct ways:  PNC Foundation’s Grow Up Great initiative founded by Mr. Rohr has granted money directly to Newark Preschool Council to improve mathematics education in all Head Start classes and they have supported arts education at NJPAC which in turn sends their performance artists to some of our classrooms.  Ms. Boyd’s class at ET Bowser is happily served by both grants.  NJPAC’s artists work with teachers to enhance curriculum goals into the arts education and on this day, the children’s performance was based on math concepts.

The story of our participation in this event is told by the author of an article in Positive Community Magazine.  Follow this link to read the entire article. (Click here)

PNC Grow Up Great
We have received a grant from PNC Bank that will help us enhance our math instruction in all of our Head Start classrooms.

" PNC Grow Up Great " focuses on mathematics instruction.  It seeks to enhance math curriculum content, increase teacher's opportunities for professional development, help parents partner with classroom teachers with home activities that mirror what is learned in school, and ultimately to positively impact the math outcomes for children.
