TIPS FOR PARENTS

Tips for Parents

Socialization

Entering Preschool

Starting school for the first time can be an emotional time for both parents and children. Here are a few tips that may help lessen the anxiety:

  • Prepare your child for school. Talk about the teachers, the other children, the activities and the separation from mommy and daddy.
  • At home, in the morning before school: don't rush--have some time together.
  • If your child wishes, let him/her bring a small reminder of home to school (a picture, toy, or stuffed animal).
  • At school, greet the teacher together. Explore the classroom with your child and help him/her meet another child.
  • Hug your child, say good-bye and tell her/him you'll be back when school is over to take her/him home.
  • Leave and don't linger--don't prolong the good-bye.
  • Be cheerful, calm and reassuring.
  • Return on time or even a bit early.
  • Greet your child warmly, listen and talk together, and be understanding if your child is upset.
  • Have special, individual times with your child in the evenings and on weekends.
