Entering
Preschool
Starting school for the first time can be an emotional time for both parents and children. Here are a few tips that may help lessen the anxiety:
- Prepare your child for school. Talk about the teachers, the other children, the activities and the separation from mommy and daddy.
- At home, in the morning before school: don't rush--have some time together.
- If your child wishes, let him/her bring a small reminder of home to school (a picture, toy, or stuffed animal).
- At school, greet the teacher together. Explore the classroom with your child and help him/her meet another child.
- Hug your child, say good-bye and tell her/him you'll be back when school is over to take her/him home.
- Leave and don't linger--don't prolong the good-bye.
- Be cheerful, calm and reassuring.
- Return on time or even a bit early.
- Greet your child warmly, listen and talk together, and be understanding if your child is upset.
- Have special, individual times with your child in the evenings and on weekends.
