Starting school for the first time can be an emotional time for both parents and children.  Here are a few tips that may help lessen the anxiety:

  • Prepare your child for school.  Talk about the teachers, the other children, the activities and the separation from mommy and daddy.
  • At home, in the morning before school: don't rush--have some time together.

PARENTING

It's hard for a parent to always know the right thing to say and the best way to discipline a child who misbehaves.  The following are a few simple guidelines to keep in mind when dealing with negative behavior in children.

  • MODEL - Always behave in the way you would like your children to behave. Behaviors like sharing, being respectful and polite, listening, following directions, being kind are all learned by modeling. You are your child’s first, greatest, and “forever” teacher!

HEALTH AND NUTRITION

If you have an overweight child and are concerned that he or she is at risk for diabetes, take action by following these seven simple steps towards a healthier lifestyle.

  • Know your Family History.  If your family has a history of type-2 diabetes, make sure your child's physician knows about it.  Catching diabetes early is the best way to treat it effectively and avoid serious complications.
  • Get Moving.  Encourage kids to get involved in sports and/or outdoor activities such as riding a bike, scooter, roller skating, swimming, dancing are good or get involve in an athletic activity.
